Larry Swedroe, head of research for Buckingham Asset Management in St. Louis will be delivering a talk titled The Quest for Alpha in Ottawa on Monday, June 20th, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mr. Swedroe is an ardent proponent of passive investing and has written 11 books on the subject. I’ve read many of his books over the years. My favourites include Wise Investing Made Simple: Larry Swedroe’s Tales to Enrich Your Future and The Only Guide to Alternative Investments You’ll Ever Need: The Good, the Flawed, the Bad and the Ugly. His latest book, The Quest for Alpha: The Holy Grail of Investing presents reams of evidence on how precious few mutual funds, pension plans, hedge fund, private equity, individual investors and behavioural finance experts are able to generate alpha. Mr. Swedroe also writes a popular blog on moneywatch.com called Wise Investing Blog that often features posts that are of interest to Canadians.

The talk in Ottawa is organized by PWL Capital, a financial planning firm that build passively managed portfolios for its clients. Cameron Passmore, Portfolio Manager with PWL Capital, has kindly offered to invite five readers of this blog to Mr. Swedroe’s talk. If you are an Ottawa area resident and are free on the evening of June 20th and would like to attend this event, just leave a comment in this post and don’t forget to include your email address. If you are reading this post via e-mail or your favourite RSS Reader, you have to click through to the website and scroll to the bottom of the page and type in your comment. Some quick rules: (1) Deadline for entries is 11:59 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 8, 2010. (2) One entry per person. (3) Canadian residents only. (4) I treat your privacy very seriously. Your e-mail will be used for the sole purpose of sending you an invite for the event. (5) If I receive more than 5 entries, I’ll pick 5 entries at random. (7) You will be responsible for any expenses incurred in attending the event in Ottawa.
